HUNTINGTON -- The Elks National Bowling Tournament is coming back to Huntington.
Elks Lodge 313 won the bid to host the 2009 tournament. The bid was awarded during the Elks Bowling Committee's annual meeting, Oct. 19-21 in Pontiac, Mich. Huntington won over the lodge from Fairview Heights, Ill.
The 2009 Elks Tournament will begin in March and continue on weekends through early May. There will be no bowling on Easter Weekend.
"It feels good. I'm so grateful," said Amy Neighborgall-Fisher, general manager at Colonial Lanes who was among the representatives from Huntington who took part in bid presentations. "I accomplished something my dad (Rob) did. When the committee members shook hands, I jumped up and down. There were a lot of hugs."
"Be Mine in 2009" is the slogan Neighborgall-Fisher used in the pitch to land the tournament.
Colonial, a 34-lane center, will be the home for singles and doubles. Ceredo Lanes, a 16-lane house, will have the team event.
"I'm tickled to death. I'm sure Roger is, too," said Kathy Workman, proprietor at Ceredo Lanes. Her husband, Roger, who has competed on the PBA Tour and Senior PBA Tour, is currently away from the lanes because he's battling cancer.
Pontiac, Mich., is host for the Elks national tournament in 2008.
This is the third time Huntington was selected to host. The first time was 1995 when 590 five-person teams entered and the second was 2001 with 434 teams. Elks tournament officials hope to attract at least 400 teams to Huntington in 2009. Rob Neighborgall was the proprietor at Colonial on the first two visits by the Elks.
"The Elks put a lot of effort, energy and money into this," said Craig Warner, director of sales for the Cabell Huntington Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The city needs to support this."
Warner, part of the bid team, said the tournament's economic impact could reach $500,000 or more. "It's out-of-town money," he said.
Ron Baumgardner, an Elks 313 member, made one of the speeches on behalf of the lodge.
"This means a lot," he said. "The people like coming back here. They get treated well."
Patrick Blankenship, director of sales and catering at Pullman Plaza Hotel, also made a pitch for Huntington. Pullman Plaza will be the host hotel. There will be a special rate for bowlers and other perks as well. One is shuttle service.
"Our goal is to make people feel comfortable," Blankenship said. "It was a good experience. I felt comfortable and welcomed. We were well received."
Blankenship said lodge officials from Carlinville, Ill., already have hotel reservations for 2009. That lodge traditionally competes on the first weekend.
Warner made the Elks committee aware of the entertainment options available in Huntington and surrounding areas including Pullman Square, which is within walking distance of the lodge and hotel. In addition, there's Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center in Nitro. The facility now offers table games. It already has 1800 slots in 90,000 square feet of gaming entertainment.
"It's big money," track general manager Cathy Brackbill said. "We want to get the word out. Our goal is to provide good service."

I'll Show You Mine -- Suzy Edition

I loved Natalie's idea, so I'm going to do my spot at home and at work. Let's start with home. And because I'm so f**king handy-dandy, the numbers below explain what the things are.
1. Bouquets of flowers from when some of y'all got married. First time.
2. Felix's etcha-sketch. When he was about 2, he made a picture of what looks very much like my gurus, John and Yoko Ono Lennon. So his mommy took it away from him... and gave it to me! To this day, whenever he visits, he always points to it and I think what a creep I am for stealing a little guy's etcha-sketch.
3. A picture of Kac and a newborn Sarah. She's now, like, 16.
4. A really old Halloween photo from Marshall. Julie was a Girl Scout; I refused to dress up and came to the Buffington house dressed as a "Gap Girl." Perhaps that's what inspired Bonnie's comment?
5. Yet another photo of Julie. This one is from my 30th birthday party. She's wearing
6. An art project from Marshall when I took some course with Leo and Chad Wiley. Ah, Chad Wiley.
7. Tapes from the We Are Marshall press junket. Drebbit: I think I was going to send you some tapes from something. I'll do that...
8. Of course the fabulous We Are Marshall Alumni Dot Com Website.
9. A gift certificate to the nail salon that Nat and Chrissy got me for my birthday. I keep forgetting to bring it. Next bikini wax, I'll think of you ladies.
I'll take a pic of me in my disasterous work space, but all my friends from work have quit, so I have to wait until my intern's back on Wednesday and I'll force her to take it. It's fun being boss.
My Friend's Son

Just have to share this photo of my friend Armena's son, Liam. Last year at homecoming -- months before he arrived -- I picked up this little Marshall shirt. Now, he's barely fitting in it. Soooo cute. And Drebbit -- I mean Chrissy -- he's a redhead like Jackson. I hope there are no paternity shockers... though I don't think you ever met Armena so we're probably safe. :)
Me and Lil C
We hung out with Leo at BW3's... yes, you read that right.... BW3's!!
We went to see the "Angel Oak." This tree is located about 20 minutes from where I live and is thought to be the oldest living thing in the south east of the US. They believe it is about 1400 years old! It is amazing! The tree limbs are so big that is parts they grow into, and then back out of, the ground. And as you can see the trunk is huge!
Chillin at a roof top bar...
Drunk and posing with a rat??

I'll show you mine if you show me yours

Here is my wonderful depressing work space - everyday 9:30/:45 to 5:30 - I sit in this dark dreary space in an office with no windows (where once an amazing view overlooking Time Square existed but then taken away by the 40 story "W" hotel). This is where I sit all day among my spreadsheets, legders and calculators.
Where do you work?
Lil C is coming to C-town
I have the pleasure of hanging with Lil C this weekend! She flies in this afternoon and is staying through Sunday. I am planning on taking her to have amazing seafood, go to see my friend Pete Rock's punk show, do some shopping down town, and just having an awesome time! Hell, we may even go to the state fair! I will post pics next week of our weekend adventure.... Have a good weekend everyone!

I am very excited....

We NEVER get good concerts here in Charleston so I am thrilled to say that I am going to see The Shins tonight for my first time. Pretty much everyone I know here is Charleston is going to be there... Leo and his wife, Pete Rock, Sara... I will try to get picks and post them! And don't worry- I will pour a little beer out for my missing homies!

Bret Michaels Is Still Single, Ladies

Perhaps Natalie wants to call off the wedding? Krista may want to hop to the left coast? From today's Page Six...
REALITY TV-show relationships don't last long, especially at VH1. In fact, Rock of Love star Bret Michaels never even got started with the "girlfriend" he selected last season, Jes Rickleff. Sources tell The Post's Melissa Jane Kronfeld that Michaels was informed by the pink-haired punk rocker over the phone that she had taken up with a Chicago clothing designer upon returning home to the windy city. VH1 has renewed "Rock of Love" for a second season, but has not announced if Michaels will be its heartthrob.
